Here we would like to offer you an insight into some of the activities that take place behind the scenes at Amati.

Broar - the first three brothers to row any ocean

12th December 2019 is a big day. It's the first time ever that a general election has been called on the very day that three brothers set out to row across the Atlantic from La Gomera in the Canaries to Antigua in the Caribbean, a distance of 3,000 miles, as part of the 2019 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

The three MacLean brothers dreamt up this project almost a year ago and have created a big base of goodwill and support in Edinburgh and around Scotland. They found sponsors to pay for the costs of the expedition, and have set the very ambitious mission of raising £250,000 for two charities on top of this, Children 1st, and Feedback Madagascar.

Amati Global Investors doesn't tend to get involved in sponsorship, but it does give a set proportion of its profits to UK registered charities, so when Broar approached us we with their inspiring energy and charisma we had a good look at the charities they wanted support for and were very impressed. They had chosen them carefully, taking the trouble to meet the key executives, just as an investor would do if investing in a company.

The charities which Amati supports, are chosen by the equity owners in proportion to their shareholdings (an idea we stole from Warren Buffet who at one point adopted this approach with Berkshire Hathaway). A number of Amati shareholders have decided to support Children 1st and Feedback Madagascar with our next round of donations, and so we have become caught up with the Broar expedition and the brothers have marked this by putting our name on their boat.

The Broar website ( tells their story brilliantly.

If you want to join us in supporting these charities you can do so here:

All donations will be divided evenly between the two charities.

They leave tomorrow. We'll keep you updated with progress.
